Baggie books started coming home this week. I hope you and your child have set up a routine at home that works for you.  They are doing a good job here changing them out.  A few friends need reminders to return the books but are doing great for the most part. Please let me know if you need support with this. We’ll be changing levels again soon as kiddos are growing fast!  A few parents asked about EPIC and our class account is set up and you can tailor it to your child’s reading preferences. Click here. Thank you so much to all those who donated to Walkathon. We’re up to 16th place! 🙂  Donations will be collected through Thursday.  Our school is so blessed by such a giving community! I am blown away by your generosity!

Mystery Readers-

Mrs. Spoors, our school’s speech teacher, was our Mystery Reader this week.  She helped us hunt for “h brothers” digraphs in Clark the SHark!  Virtual VIP Readers start next week. We still have plenty of spots! Sign up for a “Virtual Mystery Reader” slot by clicking this link. Thank you for supporting our little readers.

Celebrations-

Star of the Day – Five new friends were Star of the Day this week- Xander, Palmer, Kennedy, Jason, and Norah. Each got to be the line leader and sit at the teacher desk!

Quote of the Week –  This week’s quote went to Hazel.  She always tries her best and works hard at all she does!

First Grade Family Time –  At the assembly, we celebrated our learning, gave awards for the quote of the week, along with awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, & birthdays from the week. Here are our “award-winning” first-graders from today’s family time.

Carmel and Syker joined the shoe-tying club this week!

OUR LEARNING:

Writing – This week, we worked together as a class to create a shared writing piece about reading with a buddy.  We learned about watermelon and seed stories and enjoyed some watermelon as a treat!  We want to focus our writing in on the little seed and write about one small moment, not a whole event (Watermelon). We also practiced revising as we write and saying our sounds as we write.

Word Study – Rasheed got into a lot of mischief this week. He colored the vowels in our alphabet chart, cut blends and digraphs out of students’ name tags, and used a red marker to circle blend and digraph words around our room.

Reading– We continued to work on building our good reading habits.  I am proud of how well the students are doing with read to self and partner time. They are also getting into the routines of changing out their books each week from our class library.

Math –  We continued to work on identifying number partners (pairs) for numbers 1-10. We played fun games to help us solidify these concepts.  We did a Guess my Number math talk and even used gummy worms and skittles as manipulatives to help us make the pairs. You should have seen a quick quiz come home.  Next week will be the test.

Social & Emotional – We did two activities with Little Penguin this week and worked on recognizing and labeling emotions.
