Celebrations-

Star of the Day – A few friends were Star of the Day this week- Abbey, Anastasia, and Kennedy B.  They were able to snuggle with our stuffie friends.

Quote of the Week –  This week’s quote went to Mrs. Elders.  She is our amazing first-grade parapro and has provided invaluable reading intervention and support for all of our kiddos.  She is one of the kindest people you will meet.

First Grade Family Time –  At the assembly, we celebrated our learning, gave awards for the quote of the week, along with awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, & birthdays from the week. Here are our “award-winning” first-graders from today’s family time.

Abbey turned 7 this week!

OUR LEARNING:

Writing – In writing this week we added some new tools to our writing toolboxes! We learned how to “show not tell” by adding tiny realistic details. Later we learned all about repetition and the importance of patterns in writing. Next week we will wrap up our realistic fiction writing unit and students will publish their very own boxed book series!

Word Study – In first grade, one of the best ways for students to learn something new is through play and practice! We practiced the proper use of capital letters through lots of different word games this week. Please encourage your child to capitalize proper nouns and the start of each sentence when they’re writing at home!

Reading–  This week in reading we learned about main characters and supporting characters too! This was a great tie in to our writing as it has been so fun creating our own characters. We also talked about changing our voices when our character’s feelings change and looked for clues on how to read our stories.

Math- This week we focused on telling time to the hour and the half-hour.  The first Unit 7 quiz came home.  We then started on with shapes. We discussed the attributes of rectangles, squares, triangles, and circles.  We look at equal parts of these shapes.

Social-Emotional–  This week we studied diversity.  We talked about family stories and differences from around the world.

All the first-grade students celebrated our lunch workers this week by creating flowers to say thank you.  It says Thanks bunches for our lunches!
