Celebrations-

Star of the Day ā€“ Four new friends were Star of the Day this week- Ella, Norah, Madelyn, and Hazel.Ā  We enjoyed having them lead us in the pledge and they enjoyed lunch with Mrs. Cooley on Friday.Ā

Quote of the Week ā€“Ā  This weekā€™s quote went to Kennedy S.Ā  She tries her best and finds ways to fix it when things get tough.Ā

First Grade Family Time ā€“Ā  At the assembly, we celebrated our learning, gave awards for the quote of the week, along with awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, & birthdays from the week. Here are our ā€œaward-winningā€ first-graders from todayā€™s family time.

OUR LEARNING:

Writing ā€“ We began Unit 3, Writing Reviews this week! Our unit kicked off with the great cookie debateā€¦ the oreo vs. the chocolate chip cookie. Students used opinions, reasons, and examples to argue why the oreo or chocolate chip cookie was better, and of course, we had to taste test! Then we began reviewing our collections to find the ā€œbest in show.ā€ To do this we put everything in a line, compared the same thing on each, and decided which was the best and why.

Word Study ā€“ We began Unit 4 which is all about being word builders. Using unifix cubes with word parts on them, we practiced “building” big words together!

Readingā€“ This week we ended Unit 2, Reading to Learn About the World. It has been great to see the kids become so interested in non-fiction books and they are doing well picking out the non-fiction features.Ā  We started Unit 3, Readers be the Boss- Say I Can Do This! We are excited to continue to build our studentsā€™ confidence in reading and continue to let them take ownership of their learning.

Math- We continued working on tens and ones and learned a new strategy to solve addition problems. Students can make a 10 and then add the remaining number to find the total!

Social-Emotional ā€“ This week wrapped up Unit 3- Self Management. We worked on using calming techniques and self-talk, along with mindfulness strategies.

The kids really took on Being a Boss of their own reading this week! We had some of our best reading times ever!
