🗂Report Cards– Are in your child’s blue folder today! I WILL DO MY BEST TO CONNECT WITH EACH FAMILY NEXT WEEK TO DISCUSS THE REPORT CARD!  Please remember that we will continue to use the 1, 2, 3 scoring (while 3* is on the report card as advanced, we do not use this score). 2’s are totally acceptable and mean your child is growing on their way to where s/he needs to be by the end of the year. The wording on the report card can sound quite negative but a 2 just means they are on their way to the end of the year goal!

👟📦 Collections- Note coming home today (yellow).  On Tuesday, Jan. 26 please send in a small collection for your child (rocks, shells, buttons, marbles).  It does not need to be a lot and also it’s called SHOEBOX collections but can come in any box or a ziplock! 🙂

Celebrations-

Star of the Day – Five new friends were Star of the Day this week- Cambry, Lucy, Carmel, Kennedy B., and Palmer.  We enjoyed having them lead us in the pledge and they enjoyed lunch with Mrs. Cooley on Friday.

Quote of the Week –  This week’s quote went to our new student Kennedy B.  She fits right into our class and loves school and has a kind heart.

First Grade Family Time –  At the assembly, we celebrated our learning, gave awards for the quote of the week, along with awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, & birthdays from the week. Here are our “award-winning” first-graders from today’s family time.

OUR LEARNING:

Writing – This week we practiced writing our very own nonfiction book! We researched by looking at pictures in real books and used what we learned to add more details to our writing. Next week we will begin Unit 3, “Writing Reviews.” Please send in a shoebox collection with your child on Tuesday, January 26th! (Note coming home today!)

Word Study – We learned lots of new snap words this week! Our word wall keeps growing as we learn new snap words and spelling patterns. We also learned about contractions this week. We practiced smushing two words together and adding an apostrophe to make a contraction.

Reading–  We are coming to a close of our nonfiction reading unit. The kids have just loved it and tying it in with writing has been great.  This week they found interesting facts to share with a partner, practiced reading with feeling, reading like a writer, and looking for keywords.

Math– We began Unit 4: Place Value Concepts, and the kiddos are off to a great start! A lot of the skills were taught in kindergarten, so it has been a great review for them. We talked all about decade numbers and the number of tens each decade number has. This was a great foundational skill for us to practice before we began to add a ten on to a given decade number. Halfway through the week, we started working with teen numbers. We broke them down into tens and ones, and we learned a quick way to draw out the number using a tens stick! We also compared two teen numbers using these symbols: <, >, or =.

Social-Emotional– This week we worked on some calm down strategies to help us with anger management. One technique was to make a movie in our mind of something that made us happy.  See the visuals below for a few more.

We celebrated MLK Jr. Day this week and also the Inauguration. We tuned in to parts of “Our White House: An Inaugural Celebration for Young Americans.” We got to learn about first pets and watch both Vice President Harris and President Biden be sworn in. It’s fun to watch first graders take in the history happening around them! We LOVED stuffie and jammie day on Friday!
