šŸ“šBaggie Booksā€“ Please continue to help your child with their nightly reading log and retell cards to baggie books.

šŸ—‚Report Cardsā€“ Will be sent home Friday, January 22 in your students’ Blue Take Home folder.Ā  Ā Please know that we will continue to use the 1, 2, 3 scoring (while 3* is on the report card as advanced, we do not use this score). 2ā€™s are totally acceptable and mean your child is growing on their way to where s/he needs to be by the end of the year. The wording on the report card can sound quite negative but a 2 just means they are on their way to the end of the year goal!

ā¤ļø Valentineā€™s Day-Ā This year we are going to write and hand-make Valentines at school for everyone in our class! šŸ˜ƒ We will design and write the message.Ā  You wonā€™t need to do anything from home.Ā  (If you already bought some you are welcome to send them but know you donā€™t need to. Iā€™ll send a class list soon.) If you have any cute stickers or other crafty decorations your child may want to use to decorate, please feel free to send those in.

Star of the Day ā€“ Four new friends were Star of the Day this week- Evert, Jason, Brayden, and Skyler.Ā  They helped us lead the pledge and enjoyed lunch with Mrs. Cooley on Thursday.Ā

Quote of the Week ā€“Ā  This weekā€™s quote went to Ruby. She is a bright light in our class and always shines her sweet smile.

First Grade Family Time ā€“Ā  At the assembly, we celebrated our learning, gave awards for the quote of the week, along with awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, & birthdays from the week. Here are our ā€œaward-winningā€ first-graders from todayā€™s family time.

Norah joined the shoe-tying club!

OUR LEARNING:

Writing ā€“ This week we practiced writing with details and helping readers pictures by using comparisons. We also practiced making lists in our nonfiction books and fixing up our books by pretending to be a reader.

Word Study ā€“ We practiced using ALL of the things we’ve learned about word to help us figure out big, long words! We also learned the importance of having a vowel in every syllable of a word, especially when we are writing words.Ā

Readingā€“Ā  This week we tried to figure out what to do when we learned new words.Ā  We looked at clues around the word to see if we could find a way to figure out how to read the word and what it meant. We also worked on finding keywords and making our voices sound smooth and fluent while we read. We were finally able to start book clubs.Ā  This has been great seeing the kids working together cooperatively and also starting to focus more on story elements.Ā

Math- This week we reviewed and took our Chapter 3 math test! The kids worked really hard. While there were a few silly mistakes here and there, most students did really well and we are rocking out addition and subtraction!Ā  Chapter 4 will start looking at place value and teen numbers.Ā

Social-Emotionalā€“ This week we learned about impulse control.Ā  We used the illustration of a stoplight to help us. Stop- Control what you are thinking. Make sure you can calm down and try a calm down strategy. Think- What are my choices? Are some good choices, are some bad choices? Make Good Choices- Which choice is the best? Do I need help to choose?
