Breakfast

If your child plans to take breakfast at school if you could send me a quick email (it doesn’t need to be daily, just once) and let me know you are okay with me sending them down, I’ll add them to my list.  I have a few friends that are eating breakfast at home but want to go for second cereal breakfast as a treat and others who want to go to avoid morning work.  Thanks for your help!

Fall Celebration

This year for our Fall Celebrations we are looking forward to having parties in our classrooms, much like years past.  This year will be slightly different, in a couple of ways.

  1. Parents and volunteers will not be able to attend.  (We will miss you!)
  2. Snacks can be sent in, but need to be store-bought and individually packaged.
  3. Games, crafts, and snacks need to be sent in 24 hours in advance (or more).

Next week I’ll send up a sign-up link with all the things we’ll need.

Like previous years, we will be welcoming your children to wear costumes, if they wish.  One change this year is that children will be able to wear their costumes to school and wear them the whole day.  The intent behind this is to limit children gathering in the restrooms to change, and limit the number of children needing assistance from teachers and staff to get into their costumes.  We invite you to send your children in a costume that includes no weapons or gore, and easily allows your child to participate in regular school routines and procedures.  Can they take it off themselves to use the bathroom?  Can they fit in their seat at their desk? Can they go down the slide or sit in the swings?  Can they wear their mask?  Please save bulky, or extravagant costumes for home use, and dress in a fun and simple costume for the school day.  Fall or pumpkin t-shirts are a great alternative as well.

We are thrilled at the opportunity to celebrate with your children and look forward to creating another fun and memorable school event for them.

Mystery Reader-

This week, Mr. Boersen, Skyler’s Dad was our virtual VIP reader.  He read us The Gruffalo.  Sign up for a “Virtual Mystery Reader” slot by clicking this link. October 21 is still open. We’d also love to invite you (a sibling, a grandparent, aunt, uncle) to send in a video of you doing a read-aloud if you can’t make our mystery reader time.  We also have flexibility in doing it at a different time if you aren’t available at 3:00.  Please let me know.

Celebrations-

Star of the Day – Five new friends were Star of the Day this week- Hector, Ruby, Anastasia, Hazel, Emmie.

Each got to be the line leader and sit at the teacher desk! Next week, we’ll start over and the star student will be allowed to bring in something for a quick show and tell.  Next week will be Skyler, Ryan, Cambry, and Lucy.

Quote of the Week –  This week’s quote went to Violet.  She is a strong girl and she knows who she is!

First Grade Family Time –  At the assembly, we celebrated our learning, gave awards for the quote of the week, along with awards for lost teeth, shoe-tying, & birthdays from the week. Here are our “award-winning” first-graders from today’s family time.

OUR LEARNING:

Writing – We’ve been studying the writing of author, George McClements (Night of the Veggie Monster) and trying to imitate what he has done in his writing. It has been fun to look for these elements in other books too. We have found a lot of ellipses this week.

Word Study – We have studied a lot of snap words and added them to our class word wall.  Our work is so amazing that a reporter even came in to question us about all how we are using everything we have learned.

Reading– We have been working on strategies to solve tricky words.  It’s been fun to watch the kids coach each other and work alongside each other during partner reading time.

Math- This week we started unit 2.  We have been looking at addition equations and story problems.  We are talking about the parts of an equation (partners and total). We’ve been creating equations- using our bodies (acting out) and circle drawings to represent story problems.

Social Emotional – We started Unit 2- Little Penguin Learns to Fly. We will be studying Growth Mindset strategies in this unit.
